The job of a football pundit is to talk...and talk....and then talk some more. That's what they're paid to do. Eventually they're going to end up saying something that is either daft in the moment or made to look daft by the passing of time.
As journalists we're no different. Some things we write can make us look like prophets, while other sentences or entire articles will instead bring a chuckle when viewed years down the line because either circumstances changed or simply it was a bad take to begin with.
At least with journalists, we're expected to be objective and level-headed when writing about our subjects. That's always the aim at least.
For football pundits, there's more of an expectation that they will have allegiances to their former clubs, while some may have an axe to grind with those clubs who did not treat them particularly well. Then there's always the 'playing to the gallery' element of bashing your former rivals as well, particularly for those who also still work for their old club.
That sometimes works the other way with fans distrusting of certain pundits who have an association with a rival club.
Few things annoy a television-viewing football fan more than having to watch one of their games on the TV only to see the punditry team made up of former players more associated with rivals clubs rather than their own.
Football, as with any walk of life, produces a wide spectrum of people that work within it and that is reflected in the range of pundits employed and discussing the Premier League every week.
