Spurs' £40m deal is the latest building block towards a bright future
Whilst keeping one eye on the present, Spurs are continuing to build for the future
There's something being built at Tottenham. Every club has its golden generation that comes through once in a while and those within the north London outfit will be hoping theirs is currently being constructed.
A decade ago Mauricio Pochettino began to build a team of young players who shook up the established elite and almost pulled off something special both in the Premier League and in the Champions League as they grew together as a squad.
The key of course is the word 'almost'. Tottenham need to take that final step and there certainly seems to be attempts to build something again, not only with young stars coming into the club through the work of technical director Johan Lange and his predecessor Fabio Paratici, but also through the efforts of academy director Simon Davies as he looks to improve the recruitment into Spurs' youth set-up and the pathway for them.
Archie Gray's arrival this week from Leeds in a £40m package deal with Joe Rodon going the other way makes him Tottenham's most expensive-ever teenager. The media around Leeds have made regular, lofty comparisons to Jude Bellingham this season when it comes to the 18-year-old's development.
The Championship Young Player of the Year, who has now signed a six-year deal with Spurs, has not messed around with his shirt number.
